Bush Vows to Modernize US MilitaryPresident George W. Bush Tuesday highlighted the need to modernize the US military, saying that his country will confront all kinds of threats to the United States. The old Cold War threats have "devolved into many separate threats, some of them hard to see and harder to answer," Bush told an outdoor assembly of Navy and Defense Department personnel in Norfolk of Virginia State. Bush cited in particular chemical and biological weapons that terrorists might use against civilians. "With advanced technology, we must confront the threats that come on a missile. With shared intelligence and enforcement, we must confront the threats that come in a shipping container or in a suitcase," he said. "On land, our heavy forces will be lighter. Our light forces will be more lethal. All will be easier to deploy and to sustain," Bush said. "In the air, we'll be able to strike across the world with pinpoint accuracy using both aircraft and unmanned systems. On the oceans, we'll connect information and weapons in new ways ... . In space, we'll protect our network of satellites," he added. The Norfolk trip was the second of Bush's three consecutive daily visits to military installations in the country, preceding his trip Friday to Mexico.
