Mubarak Meets with Spanish PM on Mideast Peace, TiesEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak held talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar on Tuesday to discuss the Middle East peace process, bilateral relations and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation. The two leaders were expected to exchange views on the latest developments in the region following the election of Israeli hardliner Ariel Sharon as prime minister, and explore ways to push forward the peace process, Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported. Sharon, leader of Israel's right-wing Likud party, won a crushing victory over caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Barak in last Tuesday's prime ministerial election, raising concern among the international community about the fate of the peace process, which kicked off in Madrid, Spain, in 1991. Mubarak and Aznar would also discuss ways of strengthening trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as between European and Mediterranean countries, MENA said. Aznar arrived here Monday afternoon on a two-day official visit. After his talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Obeid late Monday, the two sides signed two agreements on promoting cooperation in tourism and small-scale projects. |
