Huge Mineral Reserves Discovered in XinjiangIt's announced by relevant department of China on February 12 that huge mineral resources of gold, copper, nickel, lead, zinc, potassium chloride, etc, have been detected in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region thanks to great endeavors made by over 1,500 scientists and technicians in the past 15 years.Experts with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Ministry of Land and Resources said that scientists have discovered 41 major metallogenic belts and confirmed 364 target areas for mining. It's calculated that there will be a reserve of 895 tons of gold, 6.97 million tons of copper and nickel, 10.80 million tons of lead and zinc and 250 million tons of potassium chloride. They also found some other important metallogenic belts in Xinjiang, which have a good prospect for development. Universally acknowledged as an area of great potentiality of ore formation and mining, Xinjiang now serves as an important mineral resource substitute area of China. In the past 15 years, China has launched three large-scaled programs and invested 180 million yuan in exploring mineral resources in this autonomous region. Xinjiang's gold output exceeded 200,000 taels last year. Xinjiang has drawn foreign investments of US$32 million along with its achievements in mineral exploration as it has established cooperative relationships with upwards of 20 mining companies from over 10 countries.
