Lucent to Axe a Staff of 200 in China

Lucent Technologies was reported February 9 to have laid its axe on a staff of around 60 employees in China as a part of its global staff reducing plan, according to which altogether 16,000 employed will be fired throughout the world. In next two months, an estimated number of about 140 more will have to leave Lucent.

As is known from news media, most of the laid-offs in China are technicians and sales clerks, who had been given a much higher pay than others in Lucent. But no one has been removed from the Bell Labs -- another branch of Lucent in Beijing. In view of a large employed force of over 5,000 staffing Lucent China, the axe is by no means a big staff reduction.
