The Red Lantern Attracts 5000 Audience in Taiwan

Performed by the Youth Theatrical Troupe under China Peking Opera Theatres (CPOT), the Red Lantern had attracted an audience of some 5000, one third of them being young people since its premiere on February 8 to the last scene on the 11th in Taiwan Province.

Though ticket averaged roughly RMB 300 yuan for each, the occupancy of the 2700-seat theatre had always been up to or over 50 percent, said Wu Jiang, the president of CPOT. Some elderly people who experienced the War of Resistance against Japan were moved to tears. At the end of the performance, many audiences asked for the signature of actors and actresses who played the role of Li Yuhe, Grandma Li and Li Tiemei in the Red Lantern and had photos taken with the artists.

According to Lin Kai, the broker in charge of this performance in Taiwan, The audiences in Taiwan were carried away by the outstanding performance. Also present at the show were many celebrities. As reported, the total box office amounts to over 500 thousand yuan.

According to statistics by some relevant departments, the cross-Straits cultural exchange programs of suchlike came to 340 times in 2000, involving 3,600 people.
