Palestinian Security Officer Sentenced to Death

The Internal Security Court of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in the West Bank town of Hebron sentenced a Palestinian security officer to death on Sunday.

Hassan Musalem, a 55-year-old captain, was convicted of collaborating with Israel by passing information to the Jewish state about PNA security forces in Hebron, Israel's Army Radio reported.

Musalem was also accused of firing at Israeli positions in Hebron on a daily basis in order to draw Israeli fire toward Palestinian positions.

The Palestinian prosecutor said that Musalem received about 1, 800 shekels (about 440 U.S. dollars) from Israel every month.

The death sentence is to be carried out by a firing squad, pending approval from PNA Chairman Yasser Arafat, said the radio report.

The PNA has arrested and executed several Palestinians on charges of collaborating with Israel.
