China's Posts, Telecommunications Report Fast Growth

China's posts and telecommunications industry soared a year-on-year 24.8 percent in 2000, the Ministry of Information Industry announced Tuesday.

Total business hit 349.8 billion yuan, the ministry said. Of the total, China Post contributed 42.4 billion yuan and the rest comes from China's several telecommunications operators, including 170.9 billion yuan from China Telecom, 111.6 billion yuan from China Mobile and 24.5 billion yuan from China Unicom.

Investment in the industry rose 25.5 percent to reach 214.4 billion yuan in 2000.

Thanks to increased investment, China now has the second largest telephone network in the world and its telephone users were increasing day by day.

The total number of telephone users in China now reach 229 million, including 144 million fixed phone users and 85.26 million mobile phone users.
