Li Peng Satisfies with Sino-Canadian Legislative Cooperation
China's top legislator Li Peng voiced satisfaction with the cooperation between the Chinese and Canadian legislatures during a meeting with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien Tuesday.
The friendly cooperation between the two legislative bodies have become an important part of the overall relationship of the two countries and have helped deepening mutual understanding and friendship, said Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).
Over the past years, the friendship committees of the two parliaments have made frequent exchanges, which has greatly deepened the understanding of each parliament in the political system of the two sides, he said.
Meanwhile, effective cooperation has also been carried out in the field of legal training, he added.
Li said he believes that there's still great potential for the two sides to develop bilateral cooperation in this sector.
He called for parliaments and parliament members of all countries in the world to make more contacts and exchanges so as to deepen understanding, enhance mutual trust and promote cooperation.
Li congratulated Chretien for his election as prime minister for the third consecutive term and lauded him "an old friend" of the Chinese people.
He said the prime minister's visits to China have fully demonstrated his emphasis of the importance of the friendship between Canada and China.
China and Canada, with no historical imbroglio and conflicts of interests, should develop their friendly relations beyond their differences in social system and ideology, Li said, adding that this is not only beneficial to the peoples of the two countries, but also in line with the diversity of the world.
Chretien expressed gladness over his meeting with Li. He said his current visit, accompanied by "Team Canada" once again, following the first team visit in 1994, fully shows the great interest of Canadian business and educational circles in seeking cooperation with China.
He said that bilateral ties between the two countries have witnessed smooth progress and economic and trade contacts have been frequent in the past few years.
The prime minister expressed his conviction in consolidation and progress of the friendly cooperative ties between the two sides in the new century.
Chretien is currently on an official visit to China, accompanied by an entourage of more than 600 people, the largest mission ever sent by Canada to other country.
