Zhejiang Set to Become IT Industry Giant

Zhejiang Province in east China is set to become one of the largest information industry giants in China in coming five years.

The manufacturing enterprises in the information industry is expected to score an output value of 260 billion yuan in the year 2005, doubling that for 2000, according to Governor Chai Songyue.

The software industry and the information service industry are targeted to gain 60 billion yuan in yearly sales revenue by 2005, which means an average annual growth rate of more than 40 percent in the five years.

All this is aimed to have the information industry's total value added account for nine percent of the province's gross domestic product, the governor said.

Zhejiang will give priority to developing software, while placing emphasis on the growth of the photoelectronic industry and the development of telecommunications products, digital consumer electronics, network products, microelectronics, new parts and components, as well as information service, Chai said.
