APEC Senior Officials Continue Discussion

The First Senior Officials Meeting (SOM I) of the 13th Ministerial Conference of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) entered its second day Tuesday, and participants will continue to discuss the regional economic situation, globalization and the new economy.

The meeting, still presided over by Wang Guangya, Chinese vice- foreign minister and chairman of SOM I, will also discuss joint efforts among member economies to promote economic and technological cooperation, capacity building, and human resources development.

According to schedule, SOM I, which attracted senior officials from the 21 APEC member economies, is to conclude later Tuesday.

Wang is to brief the press on the meeting after the meeting concludes.

At Monday's meeting, participants outlined the whole work of the organization for this year and made preparations for the 9th APEC informal leadership meeting, which is scheduled for Shanghai in October, and ministerial-level meetings as well.

Sources said that meetings related to the current SOM I will being held till February 19, and participants will hold group discussions on issues including trade, investment, economy and technology.

APEC's SOM is a regular meeting attended by APEC senior officials, and four SOMs will be held this year. SOM II will be held in Shenzhen from May 26 to June 3.
