Russian, US Foreign Ministers May Meet Soon

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Monday he may meet US Secretary of State Colin Powell in the near future, the Itar-tass news agency reported.

"In the course of direct talks we will discuss all questions of bilateral relations to be raised by either side", Ivanov said after a meeting with his German counterpart Joschka Fischer.

According to the Itar-Tass, the US State Department is considering a meeting between the two ministers during Powell's upcoming trip to the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and Belgium.

Powell is scheduled to set off on February 23 and return to Washington on February 27.

Commenting on recent statements by the national security adviser to the US president, Condoleezza Rice, that Russia poses a threat to the West, Ivanov said, "It would hardly be proper to begin contacts through such statements in mass media."

The minister said that he is going to find out in his meeting with Powell "what exactly worries Madame Rice."
