Tourism Income Hits Record High at Home Province of Confucius

Tourism income in east China's Shandong province, the native place of Confucius, hit a record high last year, according to the latest statistics.

Tourism income exceeded 40 billion yuan (US$4.8 billion) last year, 34 percent up on the previous year, statistics show.

As one of China's economic giants, Shandong is famous for its many tourism attractions like Mount Taishan, Qufu City where Confucius was born and Qingdao City, a famous coastal summer resort.

Li Deming, head of the provincial tourism bureau, attributed the tourism boom to the improvement of both tourism management and services.

"We invested more than one billion yuan (US$120 million) in improving tourism facilities last year," he said.

According to the official, Shandong this year will continue to channel more funds to further promote the development of the tourism sector.
