Beijing Reaps Record Output Value on Patent TechnologyBeijing generatedan output value of 8.6 billion yuan (over 1 billion US dollars) in total from 326 patented technologies in 2000, over two times the figure in 1999, sources from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Intellectual Property revealed.The Zhongguancun high-tech development zone, known as China's " Silicon Valley," became the leading impetus to the patent growth momentum, as it has realized some 6.1 billion yuan (735 million US dollars) in the patent output value last year, accounting for 71 percent of the city's total volume. The patent applications exceeded 10,000 last year in Beijing, a sign of patent boom in China's capital. China adopted the patent law in 1985, which has been revised twice in 1992 and 2000 respectively. Up till the end of February 2000, China has received 1 million patent applications and set up an effective mechanism for patent protection. After its entry into the World Trade Organization, China will shoulder much more responsibility in multilateral trade and intellectual property protection, said Ren Jianxin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. China lags behind many developed countries in legislation and patent personnel, for which it still has a long way to go to perfect its patent protection system, Ren said. |
