Israel, Palestinians Exchange Fire in South Jerusalem

Israeli forces Sunday evening responded strongly to Palestinian gunmen who shot at the Israeli settlement of Gilo in southern Jerusalem from the opposite Palestinian village of Beit Jalla, Israeli TV reported.

The shooting took place after a month of calm.

Gilo is a Jewish neighborhood built by the Israeli government beyond the 1967 border line and has been a frequent target of attack by Palestinian gunmen since the outbreak of the Israeli- Palestinian conflicts late last September.

An Israeli driving on the Tunnel Road between Jerusalem and the settlement of Gush Etzion, southwest of Jerusalem, was reportedly killed with a shot in the head by Palestinian gunmen.

He died of the wounds after being taken to Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.

Palestinian gunmen are also shooting at the Jewish holy site of Rachel's Tomb in the West Bank town of Bethlehem, which lies about eight kilometers south of Jerusalem.

Israel Defense Forces stationed at the shrine returned fire in the direction of Ai'dah refugee camp, from which the Palestinian fire came.
