Adverse Influence of Internet Arouses Attention in China

Members of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have called for the whole of society to pay attention to the adverse influence of the Internet on people's thinking.

Chen Jinbiao said "We cannot neglect any more the influence of the Internet on teenagers' growth and development." He added that a number of teenagers are addicted to the Internet and some have been even ailed by "Internet Syndrome."

A college student in Hangzhou, the provincial capital, for example, suffered from a mental disorder after 14 days of visiting Internet bar.

Shi Nan, another local CPPCC member, reiterated that society should provide a healthy environment for children's development.

The mushrooming number of Internet bars have intoxicated a lot of young people with little social experience. On-line news, information and social values both good and bad will dampen the country's mainstream educational efforts.

To conquer this, the local CPPCC members laid out a draft on Internet bar supervision. In the draft, they mentioned that though the province issued last year regulations on the administration of Internet bars, there were no explicit terms on how far a Internet bar should be away from a school or whether a teenager is prohibited from entering such places.

They suggested an immediate investigation of local Internet bars, setting up an overview authoritative organization and working out related laws and regulations to lessen the adverse effects over the whole society.

According to their estimates, the number of Internet bars in the province is much higher than the registered 1,000.
