Fast Development of Foreign-oriented Economy in Jiangsu

Foreign-oriented economy in east China's Jiangsu Province maintained a rapid development in 2000, according to official statistics.

The province registered US$45.64 billion in foreign trade last year, up 46 percent from the previous year.

Exports by the province's State-owned enterprises rose by 30 percent in 2000, or 19.6 percentage points higher than in 1999.

The province also reported marked progress in absorbing foreign investment, and in foreign economic and technological cooperation.

The total contracted foreign investment in 2000 was US$10.62 billion, an increase of 17.8 percent over 1999.

The province approved 2,645 overseas-funded enterprises last year, 720 more than that for the previous year.

Among these foreign-funded enterprises, 291 involve over US$10 million of investment each, with 12 of them using 100 million yuan (US$12.04 million) each.

As a major tourism destination in China, Jiangsu received 1.61 million overseas visitors last year, 19.7 percent higher than the previous year. Besides those from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, foreign visitors totaled 981,000.
