Motorola's China-Based Chip Factory to Start Production

A chip-factory in China of United States company Motorola Inc. is expected to produce its first batch of chips in the second quater of this year, according to Motorola (China) Ltd.

The factory, built in Tianjin city in north China with a total investment of 12.2 billion yuan (1.48 billion US dollars), will become Motorola's most important manufacture base of chips and other integrated circuit products. Construction of the factory started about five months ago and is progressing smoothly.

After completion, the factory will be able to yield about 3,000 chips per week.

Motorola officials said the 21st century will be an era of soaring growth for China's telecom industry, and that the company would expand its business in the country and further strengthen its cooperation with its Chinese partners.

Motorola (China) has put most of its investment into its Tianjin company to produce pagers, cellular phones and interphones.
