Tension Escalated Along Thai-Myanmar Border

Tension has been escalated along the Thai-Myanmar border in the northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai after a clash between Thai and Myanmar troops Sunday morning, the Thai News Agency reported.

A Thai military source was quoted as saying that hundreds of Thai troops were deployed along the border Sunday following the clash, which injured eight Thai soldiers, and caused dozens of casualties to the Myanmar forces.

The incident took place at 05:45-09:30 a.m. today at Ban Huay Nam Rin in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai after a number of Myanmar troops who were cracking down ethnic Thai Yai rebels intruded into the Thai soil, the source said.

Hundreds more troops with heavy weapons were tightly beefed up along the border, though all the intruders were expelled, amid continued series of gun-fires and blasts in the Myanmar side, the source noted.

Given the continued fighting between Rangoon troops and the ethnic Thai Yai rebels quite near the border, Thai troops have warned the forces with some shootings.

Over 300 refugees have fled into the Thai side, said the source.
