Guangdong in Bid to Protect Arable LandSouth China's prosperous province of Guangdong has managed to curb the shrinkage of arable land by rationalizing land use and reclaiming wasteland.Relevant administrative departments of the province were requested to participate in working out the best plans for land use before getting the projects approved. In the meantime, the province has also constructed land markets inside the province's 21 cities and more than 70 counties. Last year, 85 hectares of idle land were auctioned off or transferred through the market, generating 1.6 billion yuan (about US$193 million) in earnings. The province has also intensified efforts to reclaim wasteland. Guangdong became a forerunner of the country's reform and opening-up drive two decades ago. It has thus become one of the country's biggest beneficiaries of the campaign and a leading center for export.
