Yunnan Records Fast Economic Growth

The gross domestic product of southwest China's Yunnan Province had increased to 195.5 billion yuan by the end of 2000, up 49.6 percent over the 1995 figure, governor Li Jiating said Friday.

The per capita GDP of Yunnan was 4,636 yuan, 40 percent more than the 1995 figure, he said at the fourth session of the Ninth Provincial People's Congress held here today.

Over the past five years, the agricultural added value of Yunnan rose 4.7 percent and the added value of rural enterprises increased by 23 percent. There is a balance in the supply and demand of grain.

The industrial added value grew 8.3 percent. The pre-tax profits of the tobacco industry, a pillar industry of Yunnan, reported a net increase of 79.4 billion yuan.

The added value of the tertiary industry went up by 10.6 percent. The revenue gained from the tourism sector rose 28 percent.
