US Aid to Afghans Has No Political Motives: Ambassador
The United States Friday dispelled the impression that its emergency aid to displaced Afghans has any political motives.
While talking to a group of reporters here, American ambassador to Pakistan William B. Milam said that Washington had been assisting Afghans for years. The aid to Afghans is neither new nor some sort of political image building practice.
"I reject the explanation that this is aimed at some sort of political image building. It is a sincere effort to alleviate the plight of the Afghan people", he said.
"I think the people can see that is a continued process and it goes on," Milam said, adding the United States helped Afghans even without drought and when the harvest in Afghanistan had been good.
A plane loaded with U.S. emergency supplies for drought-hit Afghans dying of cold and hunger arrived Wednesday in the Pakistani border city of Peshawar. The U.S. aid includes 500 tents, 5,000 blankets and 500 rolls of plastic sheeting.
Meanwhile, the United States had also promised one million US dollars in emergency funds to help new Afghan refugees crossing the border into Pakistan.
