China Zoo Wants Animal Spouse

As Valentine's Day approaches, a zoo in east China's Shandong province is publicizing advertisements to look for spouses at home and abroad for wild animals it keeps.

"Animals need love too," said general manager Cao Fuyuan with the zoo. "We decide to search for spouses of robust build and proper age for the single animals here."

Alice, a four-year-old female antelope, was tortured by lovesickness when her husband died from the tiring long journey from South Africa to the zoo.

Another two monkeys, Funk and Clark, soon adapted to the new life in the zoo and were not at all nostalgic about their wild life in Tibet. However, it was getting on the nerves of the zoo to find satisfactory wives for them.

"All animals are welcome, regardless of their nationality," said Cao, emphasizing that a male can have several wives, and vice versa.
