UN Says to Press US to Pay Dues in Full

Welcoming a vote of the US Senate to release US$582 million to unpaid dues, the United Nations on Thursday said it would press for another 500 million dollars which is denied by the United States.

Responding to the move of the US Senate, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard told the press "it was with a great sigh of relief that we saw the Senate approve the release."

"There is still about half a billion dollars in contested arrears," Eckhard said.

"We will continue to talk to the US government on whether and how they would pay that amount," the spokesman said.

"All that money, and more, we owe to governments who have contributed troops and equipment to peacekeeping. When it does come in, it will go out very quickly," he added.

The payment released Wednesday by the US Senate still needs to be approved by the House of Representatives.
