Breakthroughs Made in Red-crowned Cranes Studies

The Yancheng State-level Nature Reserve of Rare Birds in Jiangsu Province is a most important wintering ground for red-crowned cranes, an endangered species in the world. Local research fellows have reportedly solved the knotty scientific problem concerning this rare bird's reproduction and its winter life by overcoming high temperature, high humidity, short-time sunshine, and other unfavorable factors. At present, the nature reserve has received financial aid from the Human and Biosphere Committee under UNESCO, which is used for systematical studies on the species gene, distribution, disease control and artificial reproduction of red-crowned cranes. HK's Retail Sale Noticeably Edged Up

According to latest statistics from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department, HK's total value and volume of retail sale had registered a 4% and 8% growth over the previous year for an overall recovery of economy and a boom of tourism in 2000. China to Build Qinghai-Tibet Railway

The Chinese government has approved the construction of the first railway linking the Tibet Autonomous Region with the rest of China. The 1,118-kilometer railway will extend from Lhasa in Tibet to Gormo in Qinghai province in northwest China. It will be the longest and most elevated railway built on highlands in the world.

Science and Technology Brought to Yunnan Countryside

Members of the publicity team, on their trip to western regions, launched scientific and technological activities in the rural areas of Simao Prefecture, the Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province between February 3 and 7.
