Fresh Israeli-Palestinian Clashes Erupt in West Bank

Six Palestinians were injured as thousands of Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers and policemen near the West Bank city of Ramallah after Friday noon prayers.

The demonstrators threw stones against Israeli forces, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, Palestinian's Jerusalem Media and Communication Center told Xinhua.

In the meantime, a gunfight between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers broke out Friday near an Israeli checkpoint in Ramallah, but no casualties were reported.

The clashes erupted after Israeli hardline Likud leader Ariel Sharon won a crushing victory over Prime Minister Ehud Barak in Tuesday's prime ministerial election.

The Israeli-Palestinian clashes, which have lasted for more than four months, were triggered by Sharon's provocative visit to Al Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, Islam's third holiest site, on September 28.

The violence has left more than 390 people dead, most of them Palestinians, and tens of thousands of others wounded.
