The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China scored a trade surplus of 2.3 billion patacas (US$287.5 million) in 2000, a sharp increase of 78.4 percent over that of 1999, the latest official statistics show.

Exports and imports reached 20.4 billion patacas (US$2.55 billion) and 18.1 billion patacas (US$2.26 billion), respectively, last year, rising 15.9 percent and 11 percent, respectively, over the figures in the previous year, according to the figures released Friday by the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao (SAR) government.

Textiles and garments were the leading export items, accounting for 82.5 percent of all exports in 2000.

Exports to the United States and the European Union accounted for 48.3 percent and 28.4 percent, respectively, of the total exports. And exports to China's inland areas and Hong Kong occupied 16.7 percent.

Most imports came from the Asian-Pacific region. China's inland areas and Hong Kong supplied 56.2 percent of the total. Goods from the United States and the European Union accounted for 14.1 percent.
