Five Technical Tasks to Be Completed for Three Gorges ProjectThe Yangtze River Water Resources Committee, designer of the Three Gorges Project, will accomplish five technical tasks in the next three years for the world's largest hydro-power project underway at the middle reaches of Yangtze, China's longest river. The five difficult tasks that need to be tackled comprise concrete pouring around the water discharge hole on the main mass of the dam, valve shutter fixing, installment of a 700 MW hydro- power generator, damming of the diversion channel, and consolidation of the cofferdam and tuning adjusting the navigation locks. As the principal technical backup of the gigantic project, the committee managed to facilitate the concrete pouring and machinery embedment in 2000 when construction of the Three Gorges Hydro- Power Project entered prime time, said Zheng Shouren, chief engineer with the committee. The construction needs eight pages of blueprints drawn by the committee on average daily. Engineers with the committee are also responsible for providing design papers for the project's undertaker, the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Development Corp. in project bidding. Zheng said that the committee has taken into consideration both the ensuring of the project quality and the accelerating of the progress. More than 200 engineering personnel with the committee are stationed on shifts at the construction site to ensure the safety and quality of the dam building.
