Beijing Promises a Unique Olympic Games

A senior Beijing official Thursday promised to give the world an excellent Olympic Games if the city wins the bid for the 2008 games.

If they choose Beijing, they will have chosen correctly, Liu Jingmin, vice-mayor of Beijing, and also vice-president of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid Committee promised at a press conference during the Fourth Session of the 11th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

We have drafted a detailed programme to produce a unique Olympic Games perfectly integrating the west and the east, he said.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials will carry out a four-day inspection of Beijing starting on the 21st of this month.

The IOC officials will hear and discuss reports by the committee on the city's preparations.

They will also conduct on-the-spot investigations according to their standards.

Liu said he would like them to see the real Beijing, ancient and modern, imperfect but with unlimited development potential.

Liu admitted that Beijing, a developing city in a developing country, cannot match Paris or Toronto in infrastructure at present. But he believes that the fastest developing city in the world will be comparable to some of the best cities in the world by the year 2008.

As to what exactly Beijing will use as its secret weapon to win the final bid, Wang Wei, secretary-general of the committee, joked that it is still a classified secret.
