Germany's Kohl May Face Fine, Instead of Criminal Charges

Prosecutors intend to drop charges against former German chancellor Helmut Kohl for his involvement in a funding scandal, in exchange for the payment of a fine of 300,000 marks (US$143,000), German news agency DPA reported Thursday.

The Justice Ministry of the North Rhine-Westphalia state said the decision was backed by state prosecutors in Cologne, who have been investigating Kohl for his failure to explain 2.1-million-mark undeclared donations to his Christian Democratic Party.
