CCF Calls for Urgent Aid to Blizzard-Torn Xinjiang
China Charity Federation (CCF) said Thursday aid is urgently needed to help people in the snowstorm-hit Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China.
Some local areas have been suffering since last October from continuous blizzards, with low temperatures of minus 38 degrees Centigrade and snow accumulations of 40 centimeters, the federation said.
According to statistics that up to the end of January, 924,000 people and 10 million head of livestock were endangered by the cold weather. As many as 108.7 thousand head of livestock died and 1.67 million residences were ruined or damaged.
At present, local people are facing food and fuel shortages and herdsmen lack funds to save the starving livestock. Sources said that materials such as clothes, heaters, fuel, instant food, and anti-frostbite medicine and that for cold are among the items most needed in the disaster-stricken region.
