Chinese Defense Minister Visits Vietnam

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian Thursday arrived in Hanoi for a six-day official goodwill visit to Vietnam.

Chi, also vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission and a state councilor, is visiting Vietnam at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Van Tra.

In a written statement issued at Noi Bai Airport, Chi said that China and Vietnam are linked by common mountains and rivers. At the turn of the century, the relations between the two parties, two countries and two armed forces have been broadened and enriched with new contents under the guidance of the common principle reached by the two parties, namely long-term stable, future-oriented, good-neighborly and all round cooperation.

To further enhance and develop Sino-Vietnam friendship in the new century not only serves the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also contributes to the peace and stability in the region.

Chi also expressed his belief that his visit to Vietnam will help promote the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries and armed forces in the new century.

Before coming to Vietnam, Chi had already visited Laos. Vietnam is the second leg of Chi's four-nation Asian tour, which also includes Cambodia and Nepal.
