North China Machinery and Electrical Equipment Exports Up

Exports and imports in north China's Shanxi province reached US$1.76 billion last year, up 37.5 percent from 1999.

Of the total exports, US$143 million came from the exports of machinery and electrical equipment, according to local official sources.

The province has so far set up trade ties with 133 countries and regions, and the foreign trade value with eight countries including the US, Republic of Korea, Japan and the regions of Hong Kong and Taiwan amounted to US$1.29 billion.

Exports of machinery and electrical equipment also showed marked increases in other provinces of the country.

Exports for such products in central China's Henan province totaled US$298 million, or one fifth of the province's imports and exports, 61.8 percent more than that of 1999.

As for the northern Tianjin Municipality, over 60 percent of US$17.36 billion worth of exports and imports last year came from such products. The city's exports to the US last year reached US$1.43 billion, 22.6 percent more than that in 1999. Exports to Japan totaled US$1.27 billion, 21 percent up on 1999.

Local official statistics show that exports in An'shan city in northeastern Liaoning province was valued at US$400 million, with exports of machinery and electrical equipment, textiles and clothing and light industrial products rising rapidly. The US, European Union countries, Japan, Republic of Korea and Taiwan have developed into its main foreign trade partners.

In the past few years, China has exported more value-added products, such as household electric appliances, motorcycles and medical equipment.
