FM Spokesman: Singapore Not to Invite Chen Shui-bian to Visit

Singapore has clarified that it has no plan to invite Taiwan's Chen Shui-bian to visit that country, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao.

It has been reported that Chen Shui-bian will visit Singapore in late February.

Zhu said at a regular press conference Thursday that China is aware of the reports, and demanded that Singapore clarify the matter.

He stressed that China's stance on the Taiwan issue is consistent and clear, adding that China is firmly opposed to the countries which have established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China having any official contact with Taiwan.

"We believe that Singapore would honor its political commitment, be on the alert for Taiwan's political attempt, and adhere to the One-China principle."
