Chinese Leaders Attend Lantern Festival Party

Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing joined Beijing intellectuals to celebrate the Chinese traditional Lantern Festival at a gathering Wednesday evening.

At the party hosted by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party of China (CPC), Vice-President Hu Jintao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, extended greetings to those present and intellectuals across the country on behalf of the CPC Central Committee.

Hu said that intellectuals are an important force for developing the country. He called on the intellectuals to continue to work hard and strive for new victories in building a socialist country with Chinese characteristics.

Artists gave theatrical performances at the gathering.
