NPC Chairman Inspects Guangdong

Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Li Peng recently reiterated the major tasks of China's legislature.

These tasks are establishing and perfecting a legal system with Chinese characteristics, carrying out legislation and supervision over the government, pushing forward the progress toward governing the country in accordance with law and building a socialist country under the rule of law.

During his inspection tour to Guangdong province in south China, Li visited Guangzhou and Shenzhen cities and inspected enterprises and city neighborhoods.

On January 31, during his visit to the Daya Bay nuclear power station and the Ling'ao nuclear station which is under construction, he said that the construction of the latter nuclear station should be of "higher quality" than the former one so as to contribute more to the country's nuclear power.

He visited high-tech companies in Shenzhen and met with company leaders on February 1.

He also investigated the situation of the reform of state-owned enterprises by visiting the Honda Guangzhou company, which set a good example of restructuring state-owned enterprises by cooperating with Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda.

Li summoned a meeting on transferring electricity from west to east in Guangzhou on February 5, saying that the province should accelerate the reform of the distribution system of electricity.

In a seminar held on February 6, Li listened to opinions and suggestions that members of the Provincial People's Congress put forward about the NPC Standing Committee Work Report to be tabled at the Fourth Session of the Ninth NPC in March.

Li said at the meeting that the Ninth NPC will do its best to make the largest possible contribution to the development of the socialist legal system within its tenure.

Li pointed out that it is another main task for People's Congress at all levels to improve public supervision according to law. Nowadays, NPC is drafting a relevant law to regulate the job.

He listened to the government work reports from the two cities, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, before singing high praise for the provincial progress in promoting both material and ideological advances.

He encouraged the province to take the lead in realizing socialist modernization by developing various ways in State owned businesses and relying on advanced productive forces.

Li warned that the Falun Gong cult is not only an anti-science, anti-society and anti-human organization but also a reactionary political organization which relies on foreign anti-China forces and engages in anti-Communist and anti-socialist activities. He said he hopes the province will promote democracy and the legal system.
