Pakistani Government Reaffirms Elections Before Oct 12, 2002Counsel for the Pakistani government Sharif-ud-Din Pirzada Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that general elections will be held as ordered by the Court last year, sources close to government officials told Xinhua.Pirzada said he was under instructions from the government reaffirming the assurances given by Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf in May 2000 to hold elections before October 12, 2002. He said the elections date is to be set not later than 90 days before the expiry of three years from the coup day. Having validated the army takeover and prescribed general elections within three years, the Supreme Court Tuesday demanded plans with exact date and schedule drawn out by the current government for holding general elections and for a return to civilian government as promised last year. |
