Beijing Housing Construction Maintains Strong MomentumBeijing last year built houses with a total floor space of some 18 million square meters, including 8 million square meters of residential apartments.Such a speed has been maintained in Beijing's housing construction for five consecutive years. Improving people's housing condition has always been the focus of Beijing's urban construction. The municipal government invested some 7.8 billion yuan (nearly US$1 billion) in renovating and demolishing dilapidated houses last year. The price for economic houses was regulated to stay at an average level of around 3,100 yuan (about US$373) per square meter in 2000, some 600 yuan lower than commercial houses. Beijing advocated the adoption of high-tech methods in building economic apartments. The first residential community integrated with digital technology has been built in Huilongguan, Changping District. And another community in Fangshan District has been equipped with garbage and sewage processing technologies. Beijing vows to construct more than 600,000 square meters of houses this year to ensure low-income citizens move in economic houses, said Wang Guangtao, vice mayor of Beijing. |
