COMESA Experts to Discuss Plan for Building Railway Line

Experts from 20 Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) states are scheduled to meet here on February 15 to discuss a plan to construct a railway line to link the Great Lakes region, the organization announced Wednesday.

The railway line will link the Great Lakes countries including Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania and countries in southern Africa from Mpulungu through the Tanzania-Zambia railway in Zambia, COMESA said in a news release.

The project is expected to mitigate transportation costs in the movement of cargo for the regional trade.

In the meantime, the European Union (EU) has given a grant of 3 million euro (about 3 million U.S. dollars) to COMESA to enhance the process of regional economies into the global economy.

Jochen Krebs, head of an EU delegation in Zambia, said the financing agreement is a testimony that the EU recognizes the key role that COMESA was playing in Africa and on the global stage.
