Sea Great Wall Stands Upright in Zhejiang Coastal Areas

Large-scale seawall construction, carried out for the first time in Zhejiang's history, was completed recently. These high-standard seawalls, extending 1020 km, now stand upright in the coastal area.

This group of completed seawalls start north from Hangzhou Bay and south to the East China Sea on the border of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, as well as Zhoushan Island. The majority of them are strong enough to resist floods that occur once every 50 years. Important sections, particularly sections around cities and towns, reach the standard of resisting floods that occur once every 100 years.

Completion of these seawalls has greatly improved the investment environment of the coastal areas, setting up a safety screen for Zhejiang's economic and social development. It is reported that the areas under the protection of these seawalls include Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Taizhou and Wenzhou. The above-mentioned cities are regarded as the "golden sector" of Zhejiang's economy, their economic aggregate and financial revenue hold a significant portion in the province.

From now on, some 20 million people will be protected from the attack of sea tide and can thus live in peace and contentment.
