American Senate Confirms Robert Zoellick as New Trade Representative

The United States Senate has voted to confirm Robert Zoellick as the country's new Trade Representative, a press report says Feb.7.

The 47-year-old lawyer and scholar succeeds Charlene Barshefsky as the chief trade advisor to the president and country's top trade negotiator.

Mr Zoellick has worked in the presidential administrations of President George Bush senior and Ronald Reagan.

The office represents the United States before the Geneva-based World Trade Organization.

Former president Bill Clinton's administration has used the forum to pursue complaints against Japan, the European Union, and other countries accused by Washington of having violated global trade rules.

Stressing the importance of upcoming WTO trade talks, Republican Senators referred to Mr Zoellick's 20 years in promoting U-S trade interests.
