Lucent to Improve CERNETLucent Technologies Tuesday announced in Beijing the signing of a US$17.4 million contract to build the backbone network for the China Education and Research Net, otherwise known as CERNET.This new network will significantly increase CERNET's transmission capacity and enable it to offer new data services, sources with the Lucent Technologies (China) Co Ltd said. CERNET was built by the Ministry of Education and is the largest national education and research network. A committee composed of professors and experts from the country's top universities administers the network. The network serves more than 750 education and research institutions and approximately 4 million users throughout the country, making it a significant force behind China's informatization drive. Under the terms of the contract, Lucent will provide CERNET with the WaveStar OLS 80G, a dense wave division multiplexing system with enough capacity to send 40 gigabits of information -- the equivalent of 1,200 encyclopedias -- along a single hair-thin fibre every second. The US-based company will also provide CERNET with network management systems, which will help it manage the increased bandwidth of its network. "Lucent's advanced technology and the close collaboration between the two parties lay a solid foundation for CERNET," said Wu Jianping of CERNET, who is in charge of the project. "As a leader in optical networking, Lucent offers the full range of optical network solutions that will serve our customers' networking needs for Wednesday and tomorrow," said Chi Hunglin of the Lucent China Optical Networking Group. The Lucent Technologies (China) Co Ltd has seven regional offices, eight joint ventures and three wholly owned companies on the Chinese mainland, employing nearly 5,000 people. Source: China Daily |
