Libyan Ship Collides with Chinese Freighter, Two Missing

A Chinese cargo ship sank and two Chinese seaman are missing after a Libyan-registered ship collided with the cargo vessel at Shanghai Port Tuesday morning, the Shanghai Marine Bureau said Wednesday.

At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Libyan-registered ship, anchored at the No. 8 berth area, began to set sail and accidentally clashed with the cargo ship nearby, which sank afterwards. Two sailors on the cargo vessel fell into the sea and could not be located, according to bureau officials.

The Libyan-registered ship lowered a life boat immediately, but could not find the missing sailors.

Informed of the accident, the Shanghai Marine Bureau sent patrol boats to help search the site and nearby area, where traffic control was ordered.

At 11 p.m. last night, the shipwrecked freighter was brought out of water and no bodies were found.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
