Inner Mongolia to Put 700 Million Yuan in Port Construction
Over 750 million yuan (about US$90 million) will be invested in port infrastructure construction in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China.
Yu Shuangxi, an official in charge of port affairs, said the central government will allocate 60 percent of the funds. So far, over 100 million yuan is available.
The construction includes 79 projects in the field of electricity, telecommunications, transport, water supply, and port patrol. Erenhot and Manzhouli, two border cities to Russia and Mongolia, will be granted 128 million yuan and 138 million yuan respectively for port service improvement.
The autonomous region shares a 4,200-kilometer border with Russia and Mongolia, with 18 ports located in the area. The region's port exports and imports exceeded 8 million tons last year, a record-high figure. Over 1.5 million people went in and out of China via the port cities, 34 percent up as against that in 1999.
