Vietnamese Pianist to Perform in Beijing

Well-known Vietnamese pianist Dang Thai Son will make his China debut on February 28 at Beijing' s Century Theater.

Century Performance Corporation said Tuesday that the concert by Dang, who won the Gold Medal at the Tenth International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in October 1980, will include Five Preludes (from book 2) by Debussy, Three Mazurkas and Scherzo No. 2 in b-flat Minor by Chopin, Five "Songs without Words" and Rondo Capriccioso by Mendelssohn, and the piano solo version of Ravel's La Valse.

Born in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, Dang studied piano with his mother at the Hanoi Music School from 1965 to 1976, then at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Vladimir Natanson and Dmitry Bashkirov.

Since winning the Chopin Competition -- a first for an Asian pianist -- Dang toured more than 40 countries and territories as a solo performer. He has also played with a number of world-class orchestras such as the Montreal Symphony, the BBC Philharmonic and the Dresden Philharmonic.
