DPRK Establishes Diplomatic Relations With Canada

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has established diplomatic relations with Canada, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Tuesday.

The KCNA quoted a press communique as saying the governments of the DPRK and Canada have decided to establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level so as to develop friendly and cooperative relations between them in all fields.

Bilateral relations will be developed in accordance with the objectives and principles of the U.N. Charter, international norms and practice as well as the principles of mutual respect for national sovereignty, non-interference in each other's internal affairs and equality, it said.

The letters on opening diplomatic relations were exchanged on February 1 between DPRK Foreign Minister Pae Nam Sun and his Canadian counterpart John Manley.

The establishment of the diplomatic relations will contribute to deepening mutual understanding and trust between the two countries and peoples, said the document.

Canada is the most recent Western country to set up diplomatic ties with the DPRK. Pyongyang established diplomatic relations with the Netherlands last month and normalized ties with Spain, Britain and Australia last year. Some other European countries have announced their intention to establish diplomatic relations with the DPRK.
