Multiple Sclerosis Victim Recovers After Marrow Transplant
A Chinese woman in eastern Jiangsu Province has recovered from multiple sclerosis following a
successful transplantation of her own bone marrow.
Zhang Qiaoying, who was paralyzed in both legs with multiple sclerosis, can now walk freely following her operation, the first of its kind in China.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease caused by patches of hardened tissue in the brain or the spinal cord and associated especially with partial or complete paralysis and muscle spasms. It used to be taboo for doctors.
Zhang was admitted to Gulou Hospital in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, at the end of last year.
Surgeons there carried out the operation by treating bone marrow extracted from Zhang with chemotherapy before transplanting the marrow back into her body.
The operation gradually helped restore Zhang's immune system, and she showed noticeable improvements within a short time, her doctors said.
