UN to Launch Aid Plan for Quake Victims in India
The United Nations is expected to launch in New Delhi Wednesday a plan of assistance to the victims of India's devastating earthquake, according to UN spokesman Fred Eckhard.
The latest information from the field shows that more than 220,000 homes have been destroyed in western India by the earthquake measuring 6.9 degrees on the Richter Scale on January 26.
That means more than one million have been rendered homeless and in need of assistance, said the World Food Program (WFP) which has appealed for US$4 million to help 300,000 particularly vulnerable victims for four months.
The main aim is to prevent a deterioration of the health conditions of these victims, the majority of whom are women and children, the U.N. food agency said.
