Power Projects in Southwest China to Send Electricity EastSouthwest China's Yunnan Province will initiate a number of power projects this year in line with the national plan for sending electricity from west to some eastern provinces. The projects include the Xiaowan Hydroelectric Power Station on the middle reaches of the Lancangjiang River; the 600,000-kilowatt electricity-generating project of the Qujing Power Plant; the technology upgrade for the Kaiyuan Power Plant designed to generate 600,000 kilowatts; enlargement production project for the Xuanwei Power Plant. Meanwhile, Yunnan will build two 500 kilovolt-ampere transformer substations and three 220 kilovolt-ampere transformer substations this year, which form a comprehensive electricity network. The projects will ensure the province can supply a total of 900, 000 kilowatt of electricity for Guangdong Province by the end of this year, a local official said. Some 1.2 million kilowatts of electricity will be sent to Guangdong next year. During the period of 2003 to 2005, the figure will increase to 2.5 million kilowatts annually. In 2006-2010, three million kilowatts will be transmitted from Yunnan to Guangdong per year. From 2015, the figure will top eight million kilowatts annually. The transmission plan is part of China's strategy to develop the resource-rich but underdeveloped western areas, aiming to help promote west China's economic development. |
