Peruvian Woman Candidate Receives SupportThe leader of the National Solidarity Party, Luis Castaneda, resigned Monday from the presidential candidacy to favor Lourdes Flores of the National Unity.Castaneda said his decision to resign is to support the only woman candidate for the presidential elections of April 8, because he thinks Flores could realize the hopes of the Peruvian people. Moreover, his National Solidarity Party and National Unity have "absolute coincidences" in their governmental plans to move the country forward, said Castaneda. Castaneda, according to a recent opinion poll, was in the fifth place, with only three percent of preferences. Flores is in the second place with 19.4 percent, after Alejandro Toledo, candidate of Peru Possible, with 27.4 percent. After Flores, is Fernando Olivera of the Independent Moralizing Front (FIM), with 11.8 percent, and in fourth place, Alan Garcia of the center-left American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), with 11.5 percent. |
