Ugandan President Maintains Poll Lead

Incumbent Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is still leading other presidential candidates with a sufficient majority to give him a straight win, according to a poll conducted by the country's leading newspaper New Vision.

The survey done countrywide between January 26 and February 2, three weeks after nominations, shows that Museveni is ahead with 54 percent of respondents expected to vote for him in the March 6 presidential elections, the newspaper reported on Monday.

Candidate Kizza Besigye remained second to Museveni with 37 percent of respondents expected to vote for him, according to the poll.

Four other candidates Aggrey Awori, Kibirige Mayanja, Chapaa Karuhanga and Francis are expected to gain 5.1, 1.7, 0.8 and 0.4 percent respectively, the poll indicated.

Respondents were randomly sampled from their homes, shops, markets, offices, gardens, streets and institutions.

A total of 51 percent of the respondents were female while 49 percent were male, and just fewer than 20 percent were urban dwellers while 80.3 percent were in the rural areas.
